International organ competition

Successful conclusion of the International Organ Competition Wuppertal by the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln

The International Organ Competition Wuppertal has taken place for the fifth time, and is organised by the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal. The event is sponsored by the Mittelsten Scheid family.

This year the competition, which is part of the Wuppertaler Musiksommer 2017, attracted the participation of more than 30 young organists from eleven countries. The eminent jury – consisting of Cologne cathedral organist, Prof. Dr. Winfried Bönig, the Latvian star organist, Iveta Apkalna, and the world-famous French organist, Dr. Naji Hakim – invited ten of the participants to the evaluation rounds in Wuppertal.

Three prize-winners were announced at the end of three evaluation rounds:
The first prize, worth € 8,000, went to the Italian Alberto Brigandi, the second prize (€ 5,000) was won by South Korean Eunwoo Lee and in third place (€ 3,000) went to Jihee Rhim, also an organist from South Korea.

The three prize-winners delighted the audience at the organ competition’s closing concert in the Großer Saal of the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal on 27 August with works from their competition repertoire.
