The third. His shortest. Johannes Brahms is Beethoven’s successor. And yet he developed his very own style of symphony.
The third. Artificial. Rather more chamber music-like than symphonic. The sequence of notes F-A-F in major and minor as the starting point of its four movements. “This is love and it makes the heart soar”, Antonín Dvořák is reported to have said about his friend’s work. And he was not only referring to the well-known melancholic intermezzo in the third movement. It’s an earworm. Just like Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra place it before the Brahms symphony. It is a play of lively melodies based on Ukrainian and Russian folk songs, and in between, a waltz. Extremely fast and still gentle. A true feast of sound and a work of timeless greatness.
This evening’s soloist is Gabriela Montero from Venezuela. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla herself is a classical music superstar. First, university in Graz, followed by theatre in Heidelberg, Bern and Salzburg, and then the call to the world-renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Just like Sir Simon Rattle and Andris Nelsons before her. And all that at the tender age of 29. This is a concert of superlatives. In Wuppertal.
