But King Ubu is not the only character who curses and swears like a berserk petty-bourgeois, Pulcinella, a figure from the southern Italian popular theatre, was always ready to be as scurrilous as he could be. He fascinated Stravinsky: “The Pulcinella was a great, drunken lout whose every gesture, and probably every word, if I had understood, was obscene.”
Lucienne Renaudin Vary celebrates Astor Piazzolla’s 100th birthday with fascinating trumpet music. Piazzolla, the great tango composer of the 20th century, was ready to explore different musical worlds. Taking jazz, pop and classics as his inspiration, he created the Tango Nuevo and brought it out of the gutter into the polite world of European art music.
