“Beethoven did not differentiate between music and living,” claims Daniel Barenboim, one of today’s most outstanding musicians. He knows Beethoven’s works inside out from the dual perspective of conductor and pianist. “Beethoven was a deeply political man. He was interested in how humans live, what humans need to live.” That becomes apparent not only in the nine symphonies that were in a manner of speaking the official face he presented to the general public, but also – and in a much more intimate way – in the 32 piano sonatas. They depict the complete journey that Beethoven the composer undertook, from his young “Sturm und Drang” years to the mature composer who had to cope with deafness. Daniel Barenboim has been more familiar with these works than almost any other living pianist for decades as evidenced by his three complete recordings and the numerous cyclic performances in the world’s major music centres. After performing four Beethoven sonatas from three different periods on 8 February 2019 in Bochum, he returns to the Ruhr Piano Festival for the 29th time less than a year later – once more with Beethoven sonatas; this time at the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal.

Worth Knowing For Your Visit

  • Performance Venue Grosser Saal

The event is taking place in the Großer Saal, the heart of the Historische Stadthalle. Its famous acoustics, spectacular sense of space under a ceiling that is 17 metres high, its décor and galleries take one’s breath away time and again.

Directions

The Historische Stadthalle is located in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia and lies in the centre of Wuppertal-Elberfeld. We are easily reached by public transport. The ICE train station and local bus stops are in the immediate vicinity.

This is where you will find detailed directions.

Parking Flat Day Rate

Make use of our flat day rate for parking. It only costs 4 euros. One useful tip: you can pay at the pay stations in the multi-storey car park itself or in the stairwell either when you return to your vehicle or in advance of attending events. That will save you time waiting at the pay stations after the end of events.

Accessibility

It goes without saying that the Historische Stadthalle is equipped to provide access for disabled people.

Wheelchair ramps and lifts (with announcement) will provide you with easy access to all rooms.

Parking spaces for disabled people are available both in the multi-storey car park and in the Südstrasse car park.

Toilets for disabled people can be found on the ground floor (to the right of the main entrance) at the eastern end of the foyer. They are clearly signposted.

A wheelchair is available in the building.

An unlimited number of wheelchair places is available in the Großer Saal.

Our concierge, foyer team and culinaria staff are happy to help should you need assistance at any time.

Service Point

Just come to our Service Point before a concert or event. You can find it in the foyer on the far left of the main entrance next to the cloak room.

  • You can buy programmes here.

  • You can rent special seats for children here for a deposit of 10 euros. This means that junior concert goers can see what's going on without problems. The Service-Point will return the deposit to you when you give back the seat.

  • You can book cheap shared taxis here for 9.50 euros per person. For many concerts and events taking place in the Großer Saal, we offer you a convenient collective taxi service. Before concerts, between 7 pm and 8 pm and during the interval, you can book your trip home at the collective taxi desk in the Wandelhalle (Foyer). After the concert, the collective taxi desk will direct you to „your“ driver, who will take no more than four passengers to their homes in comfort.

Fair Play

If you happen to be late for a concert, you won’t have to miss out on it completely. In such cases, staff from the foyer team are there to assist you. They will ensure that you can get into the room without disturbing the other guests and the performers.

Culinaria

Before the start of the event and in the intervals, Culinaria Catering provides refreshments at the bar.
The “Rossini Restaurant” on the lower ground floor is open after events in the Großer Saal (as well as two hours before events that begin in the Großer Saal at 7.30 or 8 pm). Reservations are advisable under Tel: +49 202 870565-0.
