The concert programme will be announced at a later date.

Grigory Sokolov is without doubt a pianist with cult status. The winner of the Ruhr Piano Festival last thrilled audiences and critics alike at the festival’s concluding concert in Duisburg in 2017. Born in the old imperial city of St. Petersburg, Sokolov also trained there. In 1966 he created a sensation by winning the third Moscow Tchaikovsky competition at the age of 16. His career initially proceeded at a quieter pace than that of older, well-known Russian colleagues such as Emil Giles or Sviatoslav Richter. In the 1990s, his reputation as an insider tip preceded him to Western Europe where he lived up to it in an almost legendary way at concerts such as the Ruhr Piano Festival in 1993. Sokolov is an advocate of live events and therefore consistently refuses to produce studio recordings. He warms up for hours before an appearance and describes the grand piano as “an equal partner with its own character”. For his 22nd appearance at the Ruhr Piano Festival he comes to the Historische Stadthalle for the first time.

Worth Knowing For Your Visit

  • Performance Venue Grosser Saal

The event is taking place in the Großer Saal, the heart of the Historische Stadthalle. Its famous acoustics, spectacular sense of space under a ceiling that is 17 metres high, its décor and galleries take one’s breath away time and again.

The Historische Stadthalle is located in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia and lies in the centre of Wuppertal-Elberfeld. We are easily reached by public transport. The ICE train station and local bus stops are in the immediate vicinity.

This is where you will find detailed directions.

Parking Flat Day Rate

Make use of our flat day rate for parking. It only costs 4 Euros. One useful tip: you can pay at the pay stations in the multi-storey car park itself or in the stairwell either when you return to your vehicle or in advance of attending events. That will save you time waiting at the pay stations after the end of events.

It goes without saying that the Historische Stadthalle is equipped to provide access for disabled people.

Wheelchair ramps and lifts (with announcement) will provide you with easy access to all rooms.

Parking spaces for disabled people are available both in the multi-storey car park and in the Südstrasse car park.

Toilets for disabled people can be found on the ground floor (to the right of the main entrance) at the eastern end of the foyer. They are clearly signposted.

A wheelchair is available in the building.

An unlimited number of wheelchair places is available in the Großer Saal.

An induction loop for the hearing-impaired is also available in the Großer Saal. It allows people with hearing aids to receive music and verbal presentations wirelessly via their own hearing aid.

Our concierge, foyer team and culinaria staff are happy to help should you need assistance at any time.

Service Point

Just come to our Service Point before a concert or event. You can find it in the foyer on the far left of the main entrance next to the cloak room.

  • You can buy programmes here.
  • You can rent special seats for children here for a deposit of 10 euros. This means that junior concert goers can see what's going on without problems. The Service-Point will return the deposit to you when you give back the seat.
  • You can book cheap shared taxis here for 9 Euros per person. For many concerts and events taking place in the Großer Saal, we offer you a convenient collective taxi service. Before concerts, between 7 pm and 8 pm and during the interval, you can book your trip home at the collective taxi desk in the Wandelhalle (Foyer). After the concert, the collective taxi desk will direct you to „your“ driver, who will take no more than four passengers to their homes in comfort.

Fair Play

If you happen to be late for a concert, you won’t have to miss out on it completely. In such cases, staff from the foyer team are there to assist you. They will ensure that you can get into the room without disturbing the other guests and the performers.

Before the start of the event and in the intervals, Culinaria Catering provides refreshments at the bar.
The “Rossini Restaurant” on the lower ground floor is open after events in the Großer Saal (as well as two hours before events that begin in the Großer Saal at 7.30 or 8 pm). Reservations are advisable under Tel: +49 202 870565-0.
