Actually, Pyotr Tchaikovsky was a civil servant, a legal civil servant in fact. We can be very grateful that he gave up this career, against the wishes of his family, and studied music. It is impossible to imagine symphonic music without his world-famous symphonies; and ballet without his ballets is absolutely unthinkable. Ralph Caspers talks about this shy composer and his unusual friendships.
