Symphony No. 5 in D major

The ECHO KLASSIK is one of the most important music awards in the world. In 2016, saxophonist Asya Fateyeva won a prize in the “Young Artist” category. With her instrument, she has tapped into a wide body of music. For years, she has also been adapting the concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach for her instrument and does it in such a fascinating way that one cannot help but be amazed and wish Bach had been able to hear this exceptional soloist perform his work…

The baroque composer, Arcangelo Corelli, is one of the masters of the Concerto grosso. Starting from two themes from one of his works, Michael Tippett develops a series of free “fantastical” variations that offer solo instruments plenty of opportunity for concert performances, just like the Concerto grosso.

The evening concludes with a symphony which Ralph Vaughan Williams – another Englishman like Michael Tippett – composed in the middle of World War II and that represents a peaceful, heavenly alternative to the horrors of war. It is barely conceivable that such a “beautiful”, truly visionary work was created in such times.

Introduction to the concert on Monday at 7 pm with Prof. Dr. Lutz-Werner Hesse
