Whereas Shostakovich stayed in the Soviet Union and lived in constant conflict with the official artistic ideology, reacting to state brutality and terror with his music, Rachmaninov fled to Sweden to escape the violence of the Russian Revolution, not knowing that he would never again see his homeland.
Olga Kern comes from a musical family that had ties to Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. She is considered to be an expert on Rachmaninov´s piano works and combines her programme of Russian music with Mily Balakirev´s oriental fantasy "Islamey". This piece is regarded as one of the technically most demanding works of the piano repertoire.
